Your computer is running very slowly

One of the most common effects of low RAM (system memory) is slow performance – your computer is trying to load too much information into memory, and doesn’t have enough room, so it has to store some of this information on the hard drive, which is much slower than accessing it in RAM directly. RAM is a fairly inexpensive system upgrade, so adding more is a cheap method of troubleshooting this problem. Other problems that can decrease system performance include virus or spyware infections, hardware malfunction, and hard drive fragmentation. There are tools included in Windows to defragment your hard drive. Virus protection (such as Norton Antivirus) prevents, and can usually remove virus infection. Spyware is usually a little harder to remove and prevent, although there are some excellent tools (such as Spybot Search & Destroy) that can help you with this rampant problem. When all else fails (and in the case of hardware malfunction) seek the assistance of a professional.

Your computer refuses to “boot”

There are many problems that fall into this category. Sometimes, a computer does not even seem to power on – check to make sure that it is plugged in, and that the power supply switch (or any power strip) on the back of the computer is not in the off (0 vs |) position. Many people have also forgotten to remove a floppy disk from the floppy drive, and this can prevent computers from booting (sometimes a CD left in the CD-ROM drive, or a USB device, such as a keychain hard drive will have the same effect). If these tips do not resolve your problem, then you should consult a professional.

You can’t access the Internet

Modem-users (dialup) should check to make sure that the dialup access number is correct. High-speed users (cable modem, DSL) should follow the steps to make sure that their equipment is functioning correctly. Everyone should always check to make sure that cables are plugged into the correct positions!

Your computer is making strange sounds

Get this checked out right away! Do not let it progress! Sometimes, the problem is simple, such as a fan that needs to be replaced (this is also a cheap fix). Sometimes, the problem is more complicated, such as a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that is beginning to fail. Very often, however, the problem is more serious, and indicates a failing hard drive – you know, the place where you save all your documents (that we all usually forget to back up!). Letting these problems go unresolved, even if they are cheap fixes at the moment, guarantees that they will turn into big problems down the road.

Tip #2 Back up your data!

Frequently back up your important pictures, documents, files, folders, databases etc. to MULTIPLE types backup media. This may include DVDs, CDs, external hard drives, flash drives, etc. Do not depend on a single backup on a single media. Back up your back-ups! Use multiple media formats. Tip # 3 Back up your data! (Same as above… Repeat)

Tip # 4 Upgrade your RAM.

Upgrading your Random Access Memory can have a nice performance increase on your system. Do not confuse this with your Hard Drive (storage space). RAM is only used when you computer is on. Essentially, the more you have, the more your computer can run at any given time. It is recommended that you have at least 2-4GB of RAM these days (Depending on your windows version; Windows Vista is much more memory-dependent).

Tip # 5 Upgrade to Windows 7.

If your system will support it, upgrade to Windows 7. It’s clearly most functional, compatible, and secure version of Windows to date. If you have Windows Vista, your computer can upgrade to 7. Call Handyboys Computer Repair Services to upgrade your system today.

Tip # 6 Obtain a Link Scanner

If you do not have an Antivirus or Antispyware program that has a type of ‘link scanner’ technology, you should look into them. This basic program simply checks the web pages that you search, for malicious code – before you even click on them. These programs will indicate whether the website you are about to click is tainted or malware (spyware) infested.

Tip # 7 CCleaner.

CCleaner is a cleanup program that removes unnecessary files from your PC. This frees up disk space, allows your PC to work more efficiently and also removes a potential privacy risk.
These unnecessary files are created on your computer as temporary files or working files by Windows itself, or by other programs you use, such as your internet browser. These files are not essential and can be safely removed.

Tip # 8 Auslogics Disk Defrag Maintenance.

When you store information on a hard disk drive your data may not be stored in a single location. Instead it may scatter over many different locations on the surface of the disk.
This process is called file fragmentation. Fragmentation slows down the rate at which your computer can read and write data to your hard drive because the magnetic heads that read and write the data are forced to jump all over the surface of the disk.
When a disk drive is new and contains little data, there is hardly any fragmentation. However, fragmentation rapidly builds up as your disk drive fills up, particularly if you add and delete a lot of files.
